was the last time I posted! Yes I know, shame on me! 2011 was a great year, I took some much needed time off from working freelance, doing craft shows and blogging, but now I am back and ready to be in full swing with some new direction on all of my extra extracurriculars! The hubs and I are also going to be taking on the task of a big purchase this year... a house! We are very excited and we hope the process will go smoothly. I hope to blog about the process, renovations, and decorating here! Will I be able to handle it all? We shall see ;)

Should I work for free?

But in all seriousness, working pro bono or on spec is a huge issue in the design community and when I saw this flow chart I thought it was a great way to introduce this discussion.

People often think that we designers can just whip up a design in no time just for them to "see if they like it" before purchasing (or paying for your work). Unfortunately, this theory doesn't really work in any other profession, why in design then? I mean, if you give the milk away for free who wants to buy the cow?

There is a great website I think all designers should check out called No-Spec and in addition I thought this post from Grace Smith was really well written and has quite a few really great links to check out if you are dealing with spec work requests.

What are your thoughts on this topic? On one hand you want experience, on the other you need to eat and pay rent. I know there are definitely a lot of opinions out there- I would love to hear them!

A few days ago I was online window shopping and reading blogs when I stumbled onto this gorgeous blue, one shouldered dress by Tulle. I immediately went to the online shop in search of this dress. I wasn't too eager as I figured the price would be ridiculous.... but NO! It was a great price! I went to put into my cart and with a touch of a button popped up: OUT OF STOCK. boo. whimper. sad face.

I moved on. I guess out of sight, out of mind, huh? Well wouldn't you know, I happened to pop into Corazon during my lunch break walk today to find that they carried the exact dress! AND in my size! AND it was cheaper! While I didn't have my wallet on me, I put it on hold to go back to... VICTORY!

and well, wouldn't you know, the time is calling. Gotta go get my dress! :)

I have seen these compostable dishes around in stores before but never made the big purchase. But last night I was at an event party where all the cocktails were served in these little plates. They are really cool looking and good for the environment! I pretty much wanted to keep each plate served to me... but since my clutch was about the size of my hand, I had to leave them all behind. Luckily there are a few places in my area to grab some for the next party I throw! Now just to do the planning.... :)

I was just turned onto this book by a friend of mine. We happened to be talking out our crazy urges to buy random things, especially on sale. It is no secret that I love to shop.... in fact I would love to buy this book with all the wonderful illustrations! However, a commenter on another blog mentions that it is rather strange to BUY a book about Obsessive Consumerism... touché.

A while back I got word that I was accepted into No Coast Craft O Rama. I have done the show once before with my stationery and I am excited to be selling again this year! If you haven't heard about this craft show, you can check it out here. The show always features the coolest artists and crafters! Definitely a show you should not miss!

As a lot of you already know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In honor of that, the Minnesota Etsy Street Team hosted a challenge to create an item in that theme.

Since I lost my mother in law to breast cancer I thought it would be fit to join in the challenge and create a ring in her honor. The ring I created is the Double Pearl Cocktail Ring and 50% of the proceeds in October will be donated to breast cancer research.
